Chapter 5

1. The issue of race - does the government do too little or too much to reduce the instances of racial discrimination?  Why or how so?
I think the government does too much to reduce the instances of racial discrimination. In my opinion, I don't agree with all black colleges and the TV channel BET (black entertainment television.) If there were all white colleges and a television channel marketed towards just white people, there would be riots and constant arguments. I think the government is trying too hard to appease people who are not Caucasian. My daughter is biracial and I still hold strong to my opinion on this topic.

2. The issue of gender - same question as #1.
Honestly, I think the government is doing neither too little nor too much. I think they are handling the issue of gender discrimination very well. They have made the workforce more equal for men and women which was definitely a huge step towards gender equality. More and more we are seeing women holding CEO positions which was almost unheard of 30 years ago. I am very content with gender equality in the United States, although I do hope to see a woman win a presidential election.

3. The issue of sexual orientation - same question as #1 and #2.
I think with sexual orientation equality, the government is doing too little. I've always believed that people who are gay should have the same rights as people who are straight. Why should a homosexual be denied the same rights as a heterosexual person just because they don't love someone of the opposite sex? The government should have legalized same sex marriage a long time ago. Instead, they are allowing people to protest, holding up disgusting signs that say things like "homosexuals go to hell." And yes, I know that protesting is your freedom of speech, but maybe if the government treated homosexuals like normal people, there wouldn't be much disapproval and hate towards same sex marriage.

  1. I agree with you on question 1. I don't see where whites have a tv show, a college just for them, a month just for them. I agree that the government is trying to hard to make them happy.

  2. I completely agree with you that they should not have the channel BET and black colleges. I think if we had certain channels just for white people and certain colleges that they would be out there picketing and having them shut down but they are trying to compensate and try to "ease the pain" maybe. I dont agree with you about the homosexuals. I believe a man should be married to a woman and thats that. I will say that I have noticed most people say that we HATE homosexuals and that is not the case, Just because I dont think that what someone is doing is right or moral doesnt mean that I hate them. I always feel like its ok for people to say that they agree with gay marriage but when someone says they dont it automatically means they hate gay people.

  3. I am in total agreement, it seems that the government is trying to make up to African American's by allowing things like the colleges and channels. I do think that the US Government had their thinking caps on when slavery ended and the Affirmative Action Program had taken effect. Citizens should not have expected prior slaves to enter societies workforce and have a equal chance of gaining employment and starting a free life when their competion are whites. With that said, times have changes since that then, African Americans now have an abundance of opportunites. I think the Affirmative Action Program needs to be revamped or completely stopped.

  4. I agree that the government has improved a lot in women vs men discrimination. Men are just as equal in a lot of ways which before was not so. Time has changed a lot of things.

  5. I agree that the government does too little to stop discrimination against sexual orientation and do little to move towards equality for all people. I also believe that the government should have legalized same sex marriages a very long time ago but unfortunately our legislatures let their moral beliefs that they get from their religious doctrine influence their law making. Just because someone happens to be homosexual does not mean that they are any less of an American citizen than a heterosexual person.

  6. I also agree that in some areas, the equality goes out the window. Case in point, the all black colleges and the BET tv channel. I wonder how many years it would take for a person of another race to get the right to attend one of these colleges. The race that seems to be left out of all the debates is the Native American. You hear very little about that unless something major happens, ex. Wounded Knee. As for gender, I think whatever happens in the privacy of ones home, within reason, is no one elses business.

  7. I would have to agree with you on the issues on gender. I think men and women are treated equally. I think we are getting closer to a woman president. I mean we have Hilary Clinton who try to run, and Sarah Palin who as the vice president candidate for McCain. Many women have accomplish so many things. Whether it be going into space or just getting to vote. Women aren't see as someone at home teaching the children, cleaning the house, or cooking dinner anymore

  8. I never really thought about BET and all black colleges but that's true. It never seems like people consider racism against white people but it happens just as much as it does to other races. That kind of thing infuriates me. I'm all for equal treatment and I believe that everyone should have equal opportunities. It is so true that there would be a nationwide outrage if there was an all white college or a television network just for white people. That's just not right.
