1. What makes a great President (not which Presidents have been great) . . . what qualities are essential to greatness? Why?
I think that what makes a great President is his loyalty to our country. His passion and dedication to making sure that the United States of America is the best country to live in. I think it is a huge positive if he respects American citizen's money and doesn't use tax money on things that aren't extremely important. It's important for a president to listen to the American people's wants, to consider the majority's opinion and to respond to concerns.
2. Other than Abraham Lincoln and George Washington, which two Presidents have been the greatest and why?
I think that the two presidents that have been the greatest are Andrew Jackson and Franklin D. Roosevelt. Roosevelt got America out of the Great Depression with an extremely intelligent program (New Deal.) I think Obama could learn a lot from Roosevelt, especially about topics like creating new jobs. Jackson led American troops to victory against the Creek Indians at the Battle of Horseshoe Bend and against the British at the battle of New Orleans. He increased the power of the presidency and I think that's a huge accomplishment. Jackson was also known as the protector of popular democracy.
3. Research a President that you're previously unfamiliar with - list at least three things you learned. Was this President effective? Why or why not?
I was not very familiar with Herbert Hoover, the 31st president. I learned that he served as the head of the U.S. Food Administration, he promoted partnerships between government and business under the rubric "economic modernization," and he believed in the Efficiency Movement. I think that his presidency was effective but could have been more effective. He was in office during the start of the Great Depression and I don't think he handled the situation very well. American citizens were looking towards the government to help with the horrible situation, but Hoover had a kind of "every man for themselves" attitude. He should have stepped up and been a stronger leader.

You give a good argument as for what makes a great president. Loyalty and passion are absolutely necessary qualities for someone responsible for the well being and future of an entire country. As for the money part, if tax money isn’t used for everything, what money will be? I see your point and I agree that tax money is being used on things that it shouldn’t. But unfortunately, all money must come from somewhere. It would take a lot more than just halting the tax funding for certain areas. Also, Lincoln was supposed to be left out of the equation for great presidents. Who else was a great president? ALSO, your last sentence in question number two is a high five sentence. I loved it. Great post.
ReplyDeleteI love what you put for what makes a great President. I think that passion and loyalty to the United States is a great quality to have. I also picked Roosevelt as one of my great Presidents and i love what you said about Obama. Great job.
ReplyDeleteI too agree that passion and loyalty to the nation is a must have quality for the president to posses. It is also very important for the president to not only listen to the needs of the nation but to genuinely hear them and strive to make an effort to fulfill those needs. Good post.
ReplyDeleteI really like what you wrote as an answer to question one, and I agree that the president should listen to the people. That seems to be something our recent president's have had a problem with. For question two, I also chose Roosevelt. It seems he must have been really good because everyone is picking him for the good job he did during the Depression. I don't know that much about Hoover either, I suppose I should read up on him now. I chose a lesser known president who was only in office a few months so he didn't get to accomplish any thing as president. He was still interesting though, he campaigned in two different languages.
ReplyDeleteI totally agree with you on what makes a great president. I did not think about how they should respect the American people’s money, but I agree they should think about that. They should think about where the most important place tax money should go. I too think that they should listen to the people and what they want. I also think that they should be honest with us. I think we should know 100% of what is going on in our government. I don’t think they need to hide anything for us. I think that goes along with be loyal to the American people.
ReplyDeleteThat does make a president great. However, I believe trust is even more important. Without a trustworthy president, the other aspects do not matter. You want a president to tells the truth so you know the tax dollars are being spent on important things. I think that lately politicians feel like they're above the law and that they don't have to have morals. It's all about them and screw the rest of the country. That's not the kind of leader the US needs. Like you said, we want a president who is for the people. That's what democracy is about. The people. The president works for the people.
ReplyDeletegreat job, I agree that a great president doesnt abuse his powers and respects each individual, the president is supposed to be a role model for everyone, he has the ultimate role.
